YHA Whitby

Whitby|0.3km from The Whitby Jet Heritage Centre
YHA Whitby's location is stunning - right by the 199 steps, St Mary's Church, the Abbey and with beautiful views across the river and town. It's a beautiful historic building with an absolutely lovely private garden. The table football was also much enjoyed! Abbey entry is free for hostel guests which was a bonus. However, it feels like it is coasting on its location and exterior, and was a disappointment compared with other YHA hostels. Firstly check-in is 3-10pm, despite the YHA website saying it's 24hrs (hopefully they will update this). There's also not a 24hr reception, again contrary to the YHA website. There's a sign directing you to the cafe out of these hours, but it was a big contrast to other hostels where there's usually someone around to ask for info, provide key for the luggage room, answer qs and deal with any issues even if you can't check in yet. Definitely not a warm welcome. The room was decent but the shower leaked all over the floor - a sign said to leave the showerhead pointing down to avoid floods, but the bath tap stuck out so much this meant you couldn't get under it and the mixer tap was awkward. I doubt that any of the management have tried showering in it. The bathroom is looking tired. No binliners in bins, and no storage in rooms either (they have changed completely from the TripAdvisor photos which are from 2016!!) Loud music from the kitchen underneath us at 730am on Monday morning. Overall, the hostel could do with some TLC - and will need it if features like the beautiful conservatory, where grass is now growing through the glass panes, are to last. The cafe is haphazard and the breakfasts a shambles - no trays, cutlery running out, coffee running out, juice running out (and not being speedily replaced as happens elsewhere), bits being left off the toast machine so the toast falls on the floor, etc. They seemed to only cook 4 eggs at a time and have no queuing system so we had to wait a long while for cooked breakfasts while others came straight in and were served immediately. Some staff were friendly but others were completely uninterested. We wanted to mention these issues quietly to reception as we left, but guess what... shutters up again and no one around.

The Royal Hotel Whitby

Date of stay 21/22nd September 2022…. Room 307. On first impressions nicely situated On approaching entrance dirty steps needs a good clean and the arms to velvet settees in reception shone with the dirt from hands. Booking in staff lovely BUT the lift was out of order and we were on third floor I have asthma my neighbour a walking problem ,we have a room with sea view, due to lift being out of order we were offered a 2nd floor room no view we took a look at room ,we declined due to smell in room so we struggle with original 3rd floor room, very large but unwelcoming. The view if we could have seen out of the window properly would have been nice also the window was nailed to the frame shut, No fire escape if needed then came the cobwebs not only in the corner of the ceiling but down the wall ,the wall lights were so dirty inside with dust it did not give the light it should have.head board thick with dust, bed side table thick dust on legs skirting board the same ,then came the shower mat you stand on for safety in the bath was so rank when I picked it up I drop it it was black with scum and black mould. I can’t even guess how long it’s been since it was cleaned. Obviously we called the manager ,he was very apologetic and offered another room, we had already seen another room and was not happy he offered to have our room cleaned while we were out which we agreed to unfortunately who ever he got to go to the room only changed the bath mat and sprayed what ever to make the room smell nice, but as I walked to the television I could see the cobwebs on the light still so again we checked and sure enough the room had not been cleaned, you cannot Blame the manager for this but the staff in housekeeping . The royal is a very prestigious building and is very lucrative for you business but you are letting the side down when you do not take care of the of its decor and clients, as we were not the only ones complaining in some bed rooms the plaster is coming off the wall through damp and smells ,the stairs and bannisters we filthy and I mean filthy,I would not be writing this review if I didn’t think I needed to ,Alex the manager was excellent ,but you won’t have him long if he has to put up with this many complaints, and on the good side, the bar and restaurant were good, again staff were great and we loved Anika who was in charge and she had time for the guests and their needs. The dining area would be at a loss with out her whilst in Whitby we got chatting with the locals and unfortunately the royal is know as a dive which is definitely not good for business. And on a closing point we were cheeky and worked how much you were making @£75 a person not a room a night so before this gold mind falls down around your ears do something get a cleaning team in there and do a deep clean and and builders to do repairs. Alex was kind enough to give us a discount on the first night charges. It’s a shame that the staff have to endure these complaints d

White Horse & Griffin

The house on the photo is both a pub and a hotel. It is translated as ”White Horse and Lion Beast” and we stay here. When I left the store, I took this booklet at the bar, knowing that it was the place where Captain Cook recruited sailors more than 200 years ago. A few years ago, I went to Mount Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand. Now I fly over half of the earth to the hometown of the explorer who first landed in New Zealand. Unintentionally, history is connected at the foot.
