Details

Day 1 Harbin airport pickup & city tour (includes lunch)

12:30 p.m. Lunch at a local restaurant

1:30 p.m. Siberian Tiger Park (Dōngběi Hǔlín Yuán, 东北虎林园) (about 1 hour)

Situated on the northern bank of the Songhua River, the Siberian Tiger Park is the largest natural refuge for Siberian Tigers in the world. The park is home to about 70 tigers that are monitored and taken care of by the park tenants. Drive through the open-range tiger enclosures in a specially protected bus or jeep. You may even witness the macabre spectacle of live poultry, sheep or even cattle, which are available for purchase, being fed to the tigers as 'entertainment.' Elsewhere you can view other large felines including white tigers, lions and pumas.

2:50 p.m. Sun Island Park (Tàiyángdǎo Gōngyuán, 太阳岛公园) (about 1.5 hours)

One of Harbin's most popular recreational spots, Sun Island Park is a collection of natural islands in the Songhua River, just north of the city. During the warmer seasons, Sun Island Park is ideal for barbecues, picnics and swimming, while in the frigid winter months, the park is perfect for sledding, skiing and other cold-weather activities and is a focal point for the famous Harbin Ice Festival. Additionally, when the river ices over, local residents flock to Sun Island to play hockey and ice skate.

4:50 p.m. Ice and Snow World (Bīngxuě Yìshù Gōng, 冰雪艺术宫) (about 2 hours)

The next stop is the world-famous Ice and Snow World (Open on 31 Dec), Harbin's main winter attraction. This is the largest ice and snow art exhibition in the world and features a different theme each year. As darkness falls, so do the temperatures, but this is the best time to visit as the huge ice sculptures are illuminated by multicoloured lights which contrast with the night sky and make for a spectacular and unforgettable display.

7:30 p.m. Return to hotel

Stay overnight at the Weijing Holiday Hotel or similar.

Day 2 Harbin-Yabuli (includes breakfast & lunch)

After breakfast, drive to Yabuli Ski Resort (about 3.5 hours)

11:00 p.m. Lunch at the resort

Yabuli Ski Resort (Yàbùlì Yángguāng Dùjiàcūn, 亚布力阳光度假村) (about 3 hours)

Located 177 km (110 mi) east of Harbin, Yabuli has served as the site of many winter sport competitions due to its perfect winter conditions. Take part in some snow and ice activities and hop on a snow-bike or snow-motorbike for a surge of adrenaline. Step into a horse-drawn sled, head out on an off-road adventure or slip on a pair of skis and brush up on your skiing skills as you slalom your way down primary to advanced slopes. (Only entrance fee is included, other activities are at your own expense)

3:00 p.m. Head back to Harbin by bus (about 5.5 hours)

Stay overnight at the Weijing Holiday Hotel or similar.

Day 3 Harbin departure (includes breakfast)

10:00 a.m. Songhua River (about 1 hour)

Watch Songhua River winter swimming while most people are packing on layers of clothes, others are taking them off. Watch as dozens of brave Harbin locals dive into the freezing Songhua River for a spot of winter swimming, a popular winter pastime here. After the show, take one free ride on the ice slide.

11:30 a.m. St. Sophia Cathedral (Shèng Suǒfēiyà Jiàotáng, 圣索非亚教堂) (about 1 hour)

With the completion of the Sino-Russian railway bringing an influx of Russians into Harbin, Orthodox churches were in high demand. Construction began on the St. Sophia Cathedral, or the Church of St. Sophia, in 1903 to meet the needs of the Russian Orthodox and to reinstate and unify their presence in the area during the Russo-Japanese War. Completed in 1907, the church was later expanded and renovated in 1923 and still stands proudly in Harbin's downtown today.
